Sol holds a special place in Sweet Heat Records history. The journey from her initial signing to now showcases much growth (and fun). Tune in to her new track "MAKE EM BOUNE" and learn more about her/the making of the track below.
Q. It’s been a minute since your last release — how is life, my friend ?
A. I’m doing well! Thankful to have taken the time to experiment with sound design and train my ear for this dubstep track.
Q. What’s shifted for you since your last drop? Personally, creatively, or even spiritually?
A. I’ve learned to say “f*ck it,” more in the creative process. I would have immobilized doubt and ditch a track easily, but I have been able to push past that “mental block.” It has helped being open to studio sessions with friends and getting some advice. Shout out to those friends. I wouldn’t even say this track is my full potential, but it’s where I’m at now, and to make it organically by myself is a great reward.
Q. How have your surroundings or the people in your life influenced where your sound is today?
A. I’ve had friends in the dubstep scene that produced so I was fortunate not to search that hard for advice/help. I’m not one to copy someone else’s strategies step-by-step, so just observing the entire process in the studio was a great confidence booster. It’s extraordinary to see artists in their zone. I get high strictly from the vibes. Also, I am lucky to have a great management team/friends/family that pick me up whenever I get into my head too much.
Q. When you look back on your last project and compare it to now, what feels different about how you move or create?
A. I feel I took more risks on this track. With my last track being bass house, it was as simple as ever with the basslines (that being what I struggled with from the start). For this dubstep track, I’m happy with its variety and layers. I feel I have more patience to enjoy the production process.
Q. What space were you in when “Make Em Bounce” came to life?
A. It was a track I ignored for a couple of weeks, but it was one I always had on my mind. I had a feeling this would be the one worth investing in and it was definitely the most fun (so far) to experiment with. There were other options for the vocals and I’m surprised to have made it what it is now.
Q. What is the energy or message behind this track?
A. I just wanted to make the people bounce and headbang. I don’t know if I strayed away from the genre, but it is an aggressive/catchy melody that I enjoy.
Q. How did this song challenge or free you as an artist?
A. Tackling dubstep sounds on Serum was the biggest challenge. Especially taking the risk of turning a knob slightly and possibly fucking up that sound you liked before. Almost felt like I was disarming a bomb.
Q. What do you hope people take away from “Make Em Bounce” ?
A. I hope people just enjoy the track and like the groove. Maybe even make their own remix to it.
Q. Any long term goals in mind right now?
A. Get out more dubstep for the people! Especially remixes….I’m excited to combine my favorite genres/songs.
Q. What keeps you pushing in the music world?
A. Like I said briefly I have an amazing support group that genuinely believes in me. Their belief gets me through those unfortunate moments in this music world, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. This experience has always brought refreshing challenges that have positively changed my character and life.
Q. Any advice for others starting out or feeling discouraged from producing?
A. I don’t want to preach as if I’m a professional because I still don’t know what the hell I’m doing. But, if there is a sound in your mind; even if it doesn’t relate to any big-named track, make it. Be a maverick. If it makes you happy, f*ck around and find out!
